The first topic in a massage therapy class is human anatomy. This helps you to get know the body; getting familiar with its muscles, tendons, joints, connecting tissue, structure of organs, and the chemical composition of the body. Educating oneself about the body is important to know what part of the patient's body is affected and what you need to do about it, without this it is probably impossible to treat an ailment.

The human anatomy helps to understand how medical and psychiatric conditions affect the body. Stress is generally the cause of misbalance in anatomy. A massage therapy course imparts how to practice your skills on stressed-out patients and help them gain a feeling of relaxation and well-being.

Massage is a combination of art and science. A massage therapy class teaches a holistic approach to pain and distress that has been in practice through thousands of years. Earlier there were surgery for herniated disks in the lower back; there were the natural healing arts of herbology, reflexology and massage therapy. Ancient healers used massage to treat fatigue, injury and illness. The art has greatly advanced in the modern age because of what we now know about blood circulation, connective tissue, and necessary oxygen levels in the body.

Just as the cause for various ailments are different depending upon the symptoms, a massage therapy class would instill to evaluate a patient's symptoms and decide upon what type of massage is right for him or her. Unless a proper diagnosis of the source of the patient's physical and emotional pain, suggesting a proper massaging is difficult.

A massage therapy class helps you master different kinds of therapeutic massage such as Swedish massage, neuromuscular techniques, lymphatic massage, reflexology, acupressure massage and the Japanese art of Shiatsu massage. Each of these categories has sub-categories of specific massage techniques.
