What is a Sports Massage?

A sports massage is a massage technique primarily used before, during and after athletic events. If you have closely watched any sporting event on television or in real, you would have noticed sports massage therapists who are always close by and available to aver any injury, also, they rejuvenate athletes by massaging during time outs or halftimes.

A good sports massage energizes the athlete both physically and mentally and prepares him for peak performance. It drains off fatigue, relieves swelling, and hence reduces muscle tension and promotes flexibility. A sports massage fosters breakdown minor injuries and lesions, which are caused overexertion of certain body parts.

A sports massage prevents injuries that would hamper the performance of the athlete. A sports massage can also combine several different types of massage techniques, such as that of the shiatsu and Swedish massage techniques.

Besides doing mentally and physically good overall, a sports massage also help in reducing the heart rate and blood pressure, increasing that of blood circulation and lymph flow, reducing muscle tension, improving flexibility as well as relieving pain.

Thus the greatest benefits from sports massages are that they help to prevent the occurrences of injury and also relieve existing injuries. The sports massage undoubtedly contributes to improve overall performance and thus gives a competitive edge.

Massage, when applied properly and skillfully, is absolutely the most effective in releasing muscle tension and for restoring balance to the overall musculoskeletal system. If the massage is taken in regularly, it is sure to benefit the performance of the athlete.
