Hot Stone Massage

What Is Hot Stone Massage?

Hot stone massage was invented by Mary Hannigan, a native of Tucson, Arizona, in 1993. Since then it has been practiced worldwide and Hot stone massage is internationally accepted as an effectively relaxing massage technique.

Hot Stone Massage is a special form of Massage Therapy that uses heated stones. Hot Stone Massage is a special massage that is deeply soothing and immensely relaxing.

Here smooth and flat stones like basalt are placed on significant points on the body. Basalt is a black volcanic rock, which are a good absorber and retainer of heat.
These stones are heated and used while administering massage. The heat of the stones make the tight muscles release.

How Does It Work?

Special kinds of stones like basalt or river stones are immersed in water and are heated to a specified temperature range.  Normally electric heating device is used for heating the stones. The flat and smooth stones thus heated are placed on the body at key places like palms of the hands, between toes. The stones are sometimes placed at specific points along the spine.

The warmth of the stones relaxes the muscles, calms the nervous system and improves circulation.

Sometimes the stones are placed at positions that are believed to be the energy centers of the body so as to achieve proper balancing of body and mind.

Hot Stone Massage Session

Even before you arrive for your Hot Stone Massage session, the stones are sanitized and heated.  The therapist, holding the heated stone, performs traditional massaging. If the stone gets cooler, the therapist replaces it with another hot ones. Here, the client has to tell the massage therapist whether the heat is too high or too low. He should also talk with the therapist about the amount of pressure applied.

If you have a muscle injury or inflammation, instead of heated stones, cold stones are used.

Cost Of Hot Stone Massage
Needless to say, Hot Stone Massage is more expensive than the conventional massage. Because Hot Stone Massage needs preparation ahead and it normally lasts longer than the usual massage sessions. A typical Hot Stone Massage session takes from 60 to 90 minutes and costs around $150.

Effects Of Hot Stone Massage

The warmth of the stones is undoubtedly comforting to the clients. Hot Stone Massage is highly suitable for persons with cold feet. People who prefer lighter massage and who might have muscle tension can go for Hot Stone Massage without worrying about getting cramps.

The beneficial effects of Hot Stone Massage include:
