Chinese Acupressure

Acupressure therapy consists in identifying the blocked energy centers and releasing them using a massage technique that is very similar to other massage techniques. It is performed with the finger or thumb and can heal a variety of physical and mental conditions.

Chinese acupressure is based on the ancient Chinese wisdom that dates back to thousands of years. The approach essentially consists of soothing the body through a massage of carefully selected points that are based on the meridians of the body. Chinese acupressure is similar in approach to acupuncture but is performed using only fingers and without needles Ancient Chinese wisdom has it that the body has several energy centers that are the junctures of meridian pathways. These junctures carry energy that is called Chi. Interestingly Western science has verified and confirmed the existence of such points. Acupressure consists of identifying those energy centers that are blocked and releasing them, since blocked energy centers are at the center of most physical and mental problems.

Acupressure works by strengthening the body’s own system and enabling it to recuperate from any abnormality. When the body’s recuperative system is stimulated, it is able to get rid of the toxins that build up in the body and remove the blockages to the energy centers. The toxins cause stiffness of the muscles resulting in abnormal pressure on the nervous system and the blood vessels. In turn, this affects the functioning if the body system. Acupressure works by releasing tension and stress and promoting a deep relaxation that helps in balancing the internal systems and strengthening the immune system. Acupressure is useful not only in correcting natural imbalances in the body but also in effectively treating several types of injuries.

Acupressure can be performed almost anywhere and without any restrictions or removal of clothing. The process starts with a probing massage that helps the practitioner to diagnose your internal state of health. This is followed by the actual massage, which is performed in a manner that is very similar to any other type of massage. The massaging action is performed either with a finger or thumb or sometimes with a blunt object. The massage is done under medium pressure for up to 15 minutes at a time. The procedure can be done keeping the patient either in the sitting or lying position. Acupressure is done using techniques such as rubbing, kneading, percussion or vibration.

Acupressure can help in curing or providing relief to a number of ailments and disorders. These include severe pain in the body, eye strain, migraine and headaches, neck and shoulder pains, pain in the lower back, sciatica, numbness in the hands, menstrual pain, diarrhea, constipation, high blood pressure, insomnia, stress, anxiety, and depression. As with other treatments, it is always advisable to get acupressure treatment under medical advice and supervision.

Acupressure also has a number of variations in which it is practiced. These include Anma or Chinese pull-push acupressure, Atmena, an Indian system that closely resembles the Chinese acupressure system, Jin Shin Do, another Chinese technique that employs a body-mind approach, Shiatsu massage, the Japanese variation, and Su Jok, the Korean acupressure therapy.
