Popular Types of Asian Massage

Asian massages are not only useful in treating many ailments but also help in relaxing and refreshing. These include Thai Massage, Shiatsu Massage, Chinese Tui Na massage and Javanese Massage.

For ages, India and the Far East are famous for wonderful massage techniques. Asian Massages are still very popular both for relaxation and as well as for therapy around the globe.

Thai Massage

Originated in India, Thai massage combines guided stretching and Meridian pressure techniques with Pranayama breathing. About 2500 years ago, in Buddah's time, Dr Shivago K brought this technique to Thailand. Pranayama breathing technique is meant for cleansing the body and strengthening the nervous system. It not only helps in boosting the immune system but also helps in focusing, concentration, and more efficient oxidation of the blood. Generally this massage is done on a mat or firm mattress on the floor. The recipient is made to practice yoga-like positions during the course of the massage. Nearly every recipient find Thai massages very relaxing and refreshing.

  • Shiatsu Massage: Shiatsu hails from the Japanese words shi, meaning finger, and atsu, meaning pressure. This Asian massage technique is believed to be originated in Japan. It uses thumb pressure, palms, and fingers, and works along the energy meridians in the body with the same meridians as acupressure. Health benefits of Shiatsu massage include rebalancing of bone system, improvement in circulatory function, enhanced balance of the nervous system and greater flexibility of skin and muscle.
  • Chinese Tui Na massage: Tui na is actually a form of Chinese manipulative therapy and it was developed more than 5000 years ago. Acupuncture, Chinese herbals and other health therapies are often used in combination with this Asian Massage. In this massage technique, pressure is applied at certain key points of the body. It employs a series of pressing, tapping and kneading with the therapist's palms, fingertips, knuckles or certain implements that are said to remove blockages along the meridians of the body. The result is stimulating the flow of qi (natural respiration of the body) and blood to promote healing. Tui na massage is not only useful while treatment for both acute and chronic musculoskeletal conditions, as well as for certain non-musculoskeletal conditions too. It also has fewer side effects than many modern drug-based and chemical-based treatments.
  • Javanese Massage: Another significant type of Asian massage is Javanese massage which is believed to be originated in Indonesia. In this technique all parts of the therapist's hand (knuckles, palms and fingers) are used to knead and massage the muscles. The whole procedure is facilitated by using massage oil. Javanese massage is very useful in relieving tension, alleviating back pain and healing of fractures.
