Geranium: Benefits, Using Tips and Side Effects

The geranium is not only a well-liked garden plant; geranium essential oil is extracted from the leaves through a steam distillation process. This oil is thin and ranges in color from green to pale yellow. It varies in shade. It is used to perfume many products and has a sweet floral sometimes fruity and often minty fresh aroma. Depending on the type of geranium you may get a different scent, for example the Pelargonium odorantissimum produces oil within Apple and the Pelargonium graveolens produces oil with a rose scent. As they are easily available in market and are in high demand as they are found in many flavors and cost of it depends on selection of flavors. The geranium is a very interesting plant and can be grown anywhere in the world. However, the geranium originated in Africa and did not get introduced into Europe until about 1690. However there are only some species, which can be used to produce Geranium Essential Oil such as "lemon plant" or "Geranium Robert" which has a lemony scent to them. The essential oil from geraniums is distilled from the stalks, leaves and flowers of the plant and is usually a light yellow green colour and has a bitter taste.

Although essential oil from a geranium is good, refreshing and a stimulating oil it also has great sedative properties also. This is particularly good for treating nervous tension and depression. But in no way should Geranium Essential Oil be confused with those oils which have "sleeping" properties. In fact Geranium Essential Oil has stimulating properties and should not be used during late nights. It is not advisable to use high amounts of geranium as one may feel nausea tic.

Geranium Oil is very much beneficial for health and its effects have been known since many centuries. When looking back in history you will find many ancient cultures that believed that Geranium Oil was great in serving to eliminate certain types of cancer as well as mending bones, which had been broken. It was also used in wounded places or else on cuts as it is also used as antiseptic. But today it is better known as being an affective help in such problems as pre-menstrual tension, excessive fluid retention, menopausal problems, uterine and breast cancers and those conditions which involve fluctuating hormone levels. This oil is too beneficial for a woman it helps in many ways even effective to relieve tension and depression that occurs during menopause. It is especially effective in helping to treat endometriosis. The sedative property of the oil allows a person to become peaceful and thus deal with any pain or discomfort that they may be feeling caused by this debilitating disease. It is very effective for a person who has short temperament and has lots of mental stress. In spite of having stimulating and sedative properties, Geranium Essential Oil is also an antiseptic. Due to its antiseptic properties, if it is used on any wounded place it won't give any adverse effect and irritation won't take place. Geranium oil can be included in to a mouthwash or as a gargle for those people suffering from infected throats. However, geranium essential has a nice flowery scent the taste is bitter and for this reason many people avoid using it. If anyone is allergic to its smell then it is advisable to use it in small quantities. Another good use for geranium essential oil is for those who have skin disorders such as excessively dry skin or oily skin. There have been a number of positive results reported in regard to the use with geranium oil for such troubles. Not only does it help to balance the skin but also helps to sedate any inflamed tissue that has been caused either by shingles or burns. Over all it is very much beneficial in many ways and is found in different shades and fragrance.

One thing about geranium oil is that it blends well with most other essential oils and you could always mix it with others to produce massage oil or to inhale it to release the refreshing qualities of it. However, remember that geranium essential oil should be used when diluted in a base oil, gel or lotion and not by itself. Using without dilution may cause irritation.
