Handmade Crafts: How to Make A Scented Soy Candle

Soy wax candles are economical, environmental friendly and easy to make. You can use your own favorite fragrance and colors and make them using a simple process.

Soy candles are made from soy wax, a natural organic substitute to beeswax that is made from Hydrogenated soybean oil. In 1992 Michael Richards, who was looking for a cheaper alternative to beeswax, discovered soy wax and immediately realized its potential in the candle industry. The advantages of making and using soy wax candles are many and include lower cost, less soot, being more environmental friendly and being easier to clean. Above all they allow better dispersion of fragrance. You can easily make soy wax candles with ingredients that are readily available from the Internet as well your neighborhood store.

Making soy wax candles involves mixing soy wax with dye and fragrance. The process is quite easy and straightforward. First let’s have a look at the ingredients that you’ll be using. The most important of these is, of course, the soy wax itself. It is widely available and you can get it in either block of flake form. You’ll find the block easier to use. Next comes the scent. You can use any of the commonly available fragrances, the only condition being that they should be compatible with soy wax. Check this out when you get the fragrance. Then you’ll also need the dyes to add color to your candle. You can get dyes in blocks or in liquid form. Other things that you’ll need are wicks and containers for the candle.

To make the candles, first melt the soy wax in a pan on a slow fire. Don’t worry about the pan, as the soy wax is very easy to clean and you can safely put the pan into you dishwasher after you’re through with the process. When the wax has completely melted, remove it from the fire and add the fragrance. How much fragrance to add is essentially a matter of taste and one that you will decide using your judgment in the long run.  For starters, you may use one part of scent for every sixteen parts of wax. Add the fragrance of your choice and stir well till all of it is completely absorbed in the wax. Choosing the fragrance is again a matter of taste as you have a fairly wide range to choose from. You can even mix fragrances to come out with your very own special fragrance. Use your creativity and imagination to come out with unique solutions.  While or after adding the fragrance, you can also add the dye according to instructions given by the dye manufacturer. You should be able to find these instructions on the label.

Now you are ready to make the candle. Pour the molten wax that you have prepared as above into a container. Any container will do so long as it is of the right size and shape. A Jason jar would serve the purpose ideally. Don’t forget to place the wick and position it in the center. Allow the wax to cool and you’re ready with your candle. Trim the wick to the appropriate size – about half an inch should be fine usually. That’s it. You’re ready with your soy wax candle!
