History of Candle Making

The history of candle making takes us long back to the times when tube lights, bulbs or any other electronic devices did not come into being. During this time, candles were considered to be objects that just served the purpose of providing light. They were also used for prayers, but it was only later the ornamental use of candles came into being.

Now they are used for any occasions or ceremonies such as weddings, parties, prayers and many more. A dinner with a candle which is commonly known as a candle lit dinner produce a kind of sheer magic that could create a kind of special romance between the two of them. History of candle making takes us long back when there was no power supply and people lived their night life with the help of candles and lanterns.

For thousands of years, people lived their night life with the help of candles which are simple device which works with the fuel which is the wax. Its mechanism is simple as the heat which emerges from the burns the wax when the wick is lighted with a matchstick. It has been proved through the history of candle making that about thousands of years back, a material known as tallow was used as the main ingredient of candle. They are made from cattle and sheep fat. Travelers used them and it was also used to light temples, homes and other places. It produced a lot of smoke and disagreeable odour when burned. According to the history of candle making, it states that the first kinds of candles were made from beeswax and it was designed by Romans.

These were superior to tallow as it was odourless and much cleaner. But the only drawback was that they were much costlier and due to this reason the use was limited to high class people. After that, wax from bayberry was identified by the American Colonial women. It produced a better aroma and was very clean too. This idea was also dropped as it was very difficult to extract wax. Later Whales invented a new substance known as spermaceti which produced high quality wax which was superior to both tallow as well as beeswax. Then it became an industry which employed a lot of people.

During ancient age candles were not so, well designed and were usually in tapering or pillar shaped. In the recent years with the progress in candle making unique shapes have been coming in the market every day. It was generally available in its standard shade of white with a hint of brown color. It also posed a problem to patients, as the smoke that was emitted from it was harmful for health. It was very much useful for those who went out for traveling at night as they could use it as a source of light. With the advancement in science, many gadgets were invented like the bulb, tube lights etc. But even today many houses still use it as a source of light during power outages or even in places having no electricity.

It was in 1800's the real history of candle making starts as automobiles started to be used by common people also, the need for petroleum also arose. Paraffin was introduced as a substance which was produced as a result of residues of petroleum products. Thus this substance was identified to be used for candle making which was odourless, clean and even economical. The only disadvantage related to that was it had a low melting point. But by the invention of stearic acid the problem was solved soon as when it was mixed with paraffin the burning rate was lowered. With the discovery of bulbs in 1879, candles soon changed from a necessity to ornamental ones!

Though the candles aren't a necessity but still they are considered to be romantic. Even today couples like to have candle light dinners. The ambience it creates in the atmosphere is what makes them romantic. Using aromatic candles can raise the romantic moods by another notch. With the wide range of candles available, you can set up any mood with the help of aromatic candles. Candles are pieces of art that will never go out of fashion. Its demand increases steadily over time.
