Well, shall we see how to make citronella candles?

Supplies

  1. All purpose wax: This will be available in the canning section of any grocery store. Wax can be got from a hardware store or easily from a nearby craft store.
  2. Citronella oil: For the candles you make to deter insects effectively you need quality citronella oil.
  3. Mold: The mold can be of any shape and size of your liking. Even a recycled can or glass can also serve as mold.
  4. Container for melting wax: A pan filled with water is the right choice.
  5. Wick: For a candle to be lit, wick is a must. You can buy one or simply make one by dipping string into hot wax.
  6. Thermometer
  7. Releaser: For making citronella candles you need silicone spray or cooking oil as releaser. The releaser should not be petroleum based. If not it will burn.
  8. Wooden Spoon: This is for melting the wax
  9. Wick cutter: Scissors or knife will serve the purpose.

Method of Making Citronella Candles

First step is to keep the wick ready. If you are buying ready made wicks you do not have to do any thing. If you are making it by yourself, soak the string piece or cord in to molten wax and allow it to dry on a wax paper sheet.

Next to heat the wax, first heat the container to about 140 degrees. Use thermometer for measuring temperature. Then put wax into the container. While wax is melting add few drops of citronella oil and stir with the wooden spoon. 2 to 3 drops will do. Constant stirring of molten wax is necessary.

Then spray the releaser in the mold. Then pour the melted wax into the mold. Do not fill up to the top. Leave at least an inch of space free and in filled at the top of the mold. Finally place the wax in the melting wax. You can tie the wick to a pencil so that it stands in tits place.

Allow the candle to cool for at least 5 hours. That’s all. Your own homemade citronella candles are ready. Now, for your next outdoor dinner or party you do not have to worry about mosquitoes or any other insects for that matter. Your citronella candles, in addition to setting the mood for the occasion, will deter mosquitoes and insects much to your enjoyment and peace.
