Candle Making Projects: How To Make Votive Candles

Votive candles are very expansive in the market because of its uniqueness than other candles. You can light up your house and garden with these colorful, festive and fragrant votive candles, which can be hung from the trees. Its look much similar like strings of electric holiday lamps.

People are interested to make votive candles because it is very easy to make and the quality of votives is great because it burns approximately around 15 hours and consume all the wax that was used to make it.

A properly made votive will be able to liquefy to some degree as it starts burning. This is imperative to achieve lovely scent throw. Votives are generally not like just free standing candles. Therefore, it is significant to burn votives only in holders.

During your vacations you can have votive candle making project with your family members or friends.

The main ingredients and apparatuses for making votive candles are required

  • Wax suitable and fine for votive
  • Wax additives needed for the wax formulation
  • Dye (it is optional)
  • Fragrance oil (it is optional)
  • Pre-tabbed wicks, 36-24-42 size zinc core (which are suitable for votive candles)
  • Metal votive for molding
  • Mold sprayer ( it is optional)
  • A pouring pot
  • Thermometer
  • Double boiler

To start with the process of making votive candles you must get ready with all the mentioned ingredients and required apparatuses.

At first set the double boiler for melting your wax. A suitable and the best temperature for votives is about 175 degrees Fahrenheit. Once the wax is melted completely, then add additives, which are selected by you, mix it properly, but make a point that air should not get into the mixture. Add the ingredients in a systematic order:

  • Additives to be added if those are needed
  • Fragrance or scented Oil
  • Dye to be added to get your preferred color.

Once everything is mixed up you get a fine mixture and that has to be poured into the votive molds. Before pouring the mixture, you have to coat your molds lightly and slightly with a thin film, mold-releasing agents like a Pam-type cooking spray or silicone spray. These releasing agents help in releasing the finished votive candle from the molds. You can use different kinds of molds available in the market such as metal, seamless, silicone and latex.

The candles in these small lanterns give glowing, soft ambiance that creates much natural light than electric holiday lamps.

You can add more artistic touch by using bright colored translucent vellum paper. To create more visual attraction and interest you can use varieties of colors, which will give you lively and exciting mood.

Materials used for Votive Cover

  • About 20-gauge wire, 24 inches long
  • Votive holders made of glass, diameter 2 1/2 inches
  • Needle-nosed pliers
  • 8 x 31/2 inches Paper
  • Triangle
  • Ruler
  • X-acto knife
  • Bone folder
  • double-sided tape
  • Votive candle or tea light 1/4-1/2-inch

You can use the wires, wrapping around the glass votive holder couple of times. Pull out the wire from the bottom of the glass to the other side, and thread it with the circumference wire. Then remove the glass and tie the wire around the circumference wire three to four times.

Tag it tight using pliers.

Get thee loose end of the wire to the original twisted joint and then twist it around to the right and left of the original joint to keep it intact in one place. Then place the glass into the wire holder. Then bend the top of the wire to create a hook like structure.
