Candle Making -  The skill of mastery

Since the primitive age man has depended on fire to cook and keep himself warm. Since invention of fire, man depended on fire for to lighten up his home. As the time passed by man found a way to make candle out of beeswax. However as time passed cheaper substitutes were used to make candles. In the modern times now the candles are used as decorative items as the electricity was invented and is being used extensively.

The candle is basically a light source as that usually has an internal wick rising through the center of a column of solid fuel. Nowadays decorative candles are available in the market. People have started to make candles at home. These candles are made up of melting the industrial wax on the stove at home and then pouring them into various moulds and letting them cool down at the room temperature.

Later they are extracted from these moulds. Usually you would find these candles in shapes of stars, hearts, cartoons, etc.

This is a simple way to make candle at home. These candles however lack the finishing or the sophistication yet if they are made professionally they have the finesse.

eeswax, from which the candles were made earlier, provided pure raw material for making. But they were very expensive and hence a cheaper substitute was invented called Tallow. Further was replaced by paraffin. Paraffin is made from residues of petrol products.

A lot of accessories are used nowadays to decorate these candles. While making these candles, glitter is added to give them a shiny effect. Stearic powder is added to give it a smoothening effect. These days different kind of shapes and sizes are seen in candles. Some are blocks, pillars, hearts, roses, gingerbread man, cartoons, balls, etc.

The instrument to hold these candles, are called chandleries. Different kinds of attractive chandeliers are available in market.

We find that different religions use candles for worship purposes. Like Christians light candle in church, Hindus use terracotta diyas in which they put the candle and light in during the festival of diwali. Buddhists use butter lamp during the ritual observances. Now all these religions use candles, which are made differently. Like the candles, which Christians use, are called Votive candles which lit along with the prayer whereas Buddhists use Butter lamp.

It is lit to show respect. Hindus use terracotta diyas, which are made from clay in which they put the candles, which mark the victory of truth over the evil.

It is also believed that earlier candles were used for time keeping. With its consistent and measurable burning earlier people would tell the time. Special candles were designed for this purpose. They had time measurements, usually in hours marked on the wax.

Candle maybe a simple thing, which we use in our day-to-day life but it is the only thing, which we can make and use it in various ways. And not only candles several decorative articles can be made too.
